Before the zero-covid lockdowns changed China, people were free to walk around university campuses. I took advantage of this in 2019 and often strolled around Huazhong University’s (HUST) campus. I applied to study Mandarin, but the opportunity fell-through when they switched all classes online after the lockdowns began. HUST is among China’s most prestigious and famous universities. It was founded in 1953 with the merging of several Christian missionary institutions into a new Marxist university.
